Birth chart aspects: how planets form a conversation

Understand conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines, and sextiles as symbolic relationships rather than good-or-bad verdicts.

The five major aspect families

A conjunction places two planets close together, concentrating their symbolism. An opposition places them across the chart and can highlight polarity or perspective. A square forms a right angle and is often read as friction that asks for adjustment. A trine links planets in an easy flow, while a sextile is commonly read as a supportive possibility that still benefits from participation.

Words such as easy and tense describe a symbolic relationship, not the quality of a person or the outcome of a life. Ease can be underused; friction can develop skill.

Orbs and precision

An aspect rarely has to be mathematically exact. Astrologers use an orb, a range of degrees around the ideal angle. Wider orbs include more relationships; narrower orbs emphasize the strongest geometry. Different schools use different limits.

A transparent chart states its orb rules. It should not quietly change them to manufacture a dramatic interpretation.

Translate an aspect into a question

Name the two planetary functions, then the kind of relationship. A Moon-Saturn square, for example, might invite a question about emotional needs and responsibility. It does not prove deprivation, a difficult parent, or a future event.

Look for a real situation where both sides are visible. Ask what each side protects, where they cooperate, and what a more flexible response would look like.
